Belgrade’s gearing up for a major upgrade—and it’s rolling in silently. Ahead of World Expo 2027, the Serbian capital is preparing to launch 100 brand-new electric buses to move crowds during the global event. And they aren’t just any buses—they’re a smart mix of battery and supercapacitor tech, with a splash of Chinese engineering.
So, what’s this all about? Belgrade wants to wow the world when Expo 2027 kicks off from May to August. To make that happen, the city’s investing in clean mobility. According to eKapija, all 100 electric buses will be built by Higer, a Chinese manufacturer that ranked just behind BYD and Yutong in 2024’s export charts. Half of the fleet will run on traditional EV batteries, and the other half will use supercapacitors—great for fast charging.
Giant E-Buses to Move Thousands
Here’s where it gets really interesting: 15 of the 100 buses will be massive 25-meter-long double-articulated electric buses. These giants are built for busy Expo routes:
- 9 buses will connect the Serbian National Stadium to the Expo grounds.
- Six of those new buses will be running between Block 45 and the Expo site, helping carry the rush during peak hours.
Now, about the other 85? No one’s said much officially, but chances are they’ll be spread across other busy routes in the city. After all, during an event that big, people will need to get around — and fast.
These Buses Won’t Just Vanish After August
What’s interesting is that the whole thing isn’t just a one-time show. The plan is to keep using these electric buses even after the Expo wraps up. They’ll be handed over to GSP Belgrade, which runs the city’s public transport. So, these vehicles will likely become part of everyday life in Belgrade.
To make sure everything runs smoothly, the city’s also working on more charging stations. They’re setting up quick-charging points — especially important for those buses with supercapacitors, since they need frequent but short charges between trips.
More Than Just a Temporary Showpiece
Sure, electric buses are not new tech. You’ll find them in dozens of cities. But 100 of them, custom-ordered for a global event, made in China, and running in a European capital — that’s quite a mix. It’s also a strong statement. Belgrade isn’t just prepping for Expo 2027 — they’re thinking longer-term.
The Expo will come and go, but these buses? They’ll stay. Cleaner air, less noise, and fewer fumes on the road. In a few years, people might not even remember the Expo — but they’ll still be riding in the buses it brought in.
